CERTIFICATION as a BIOENERGETIC THERAPIST

During the final year of training, participants are encouraged to be working Bioenergetically with clients and to be embarking upon the supervision component of their training. This means the person in training needs to have 50 hours of supervision of their work. Some of these hours (15) can be done in a group with the supervisor. Hearing the insights and struggles of others adds to the richness of learning.

You are encouraged to keep an attendance log of:

  • Bioenergetic Training workshops you attended
  • Bioenergetic workshops & conferences you attended
  • talks, exercise classes you have given
  • supervision you have had
  • therapy hours.

The final workshop in the SOSBA training program “Synthesis and Evaluation” will review each trainee’s training log and get feedback on areas to focus on to achieve certification.

When the trainee feels they are ready, they will apply for certification by following the procedures listed below.

CERTIFICATION PROCEDURE

1. Certification: For Certification, the trainee needs to have completed the training requirements (480 training workshop hours, 150 of their own Bioenergetic therapy hours, 50 supervision hours). To complete the supervision requirement, it is recommended the trainee have 2 supervisors, preferably a male and a female who have supervised the trainee’s work with at least 2 clients (preferably a male and a female) over an extended period.

2. Application for Certification: The trainee sends an Application for Certification to the Coordinating Trainer (or his/her designate). The Application includes:

a. The trainee’s log demonstrating criteria met (workshop hours, therapy hours, supervision hours).
b. Trainee presents a video of a session, with their written comments on their work covering:

i. Diagnosis (including a bioenergetic diaagnosis)
ii. What the session’s focus is and how it fits into the treatment plan (i.e. the person’s story & readiness for change)
iii. What was behind the decision to use this particular bioenergetic intervention
iv. What transference issues were operating
v. What countertransference issues were operating
vi. What is the next step in the treatment process (the next session)
vii. What questions the trainee has

c. Supporting letters and comments from the trainee’s supervisors (who have reviewed the tape and comments).
d. Supporting letters and comments from 2 International Trainers the trainee has selected, (who have also reviewed the tape and comments).

Where the Coordinating Trainer is one of the supporting International Trainers selected by the trainee, or is otherwise unavailable, the Coordinating Trainer will designate one of the International Trainers to review, assess and approve (if appropriate) the application.

A certificate of Certification as a Bioenergetic Therapist, will then be issued and IIBA will be informed & the Bioenergetic Community notified. The trainee has the choice to have the certificate awarded by thier society (in this case, by SOSBA) or by the IIBA. All certification is recognized throughout the Bioenergetic community worldwide.

“To be an integrated individual, [you] must be identified with [your] body and with [your] word... To achieve this integration, one must start with being the body - You are your body... One must end with being the word - You are your word. But the word must come from the heart.” Alexander Lowen, Founder of Bioenergetic Analysis
