SOUTHERN ONTARIO SOCIETY FOR BIOENERGETIC ANALYSIS

CODE OF ETHICS

As a bioenergetic therapist, I respect the dignity, worth and uniqueness of all individuals. I am committed to furthering and protecting basic human rights and human wellbeing in the best interest of my clients. My knowledge and skills are used in a manner consistent with these values. I adhere to the following principles:

I. I agree to submit to and be guided by the Code of Ethics of the International Institute for Bioenergetic Analysis, and the Code of Ethics of my own specific profession.

II. I continually expand my understanding of human behaviour and my therapeutic skills, through ongoing professional education, and by maintaining ongoing professional consultation.

III. I respect and honour the dignity, worth and freedom of choice of every individual. I endeavour to understand differences in values, beliefs and freedom of choice.

IV. I am aware of and sensitive to the strong emotions that can arise in therapy. I work with the client in maintaining appropriate boundaries. Sexual contact with a client during or after treatment is inappropriate and unethical.

V. I take the required time to educate the client as to theory and practice and to establish an atmosphere of trust. Bioenergetic Therapy aims to utilize appropriate interventions, respecting and taking into account the client's attitudes, background, history and character structure.

VI. If I become aware of unethical behaviour by another therapist, I attempt to resolve the issue with the therapist. If appropriate, I refer the matter to the appropriate professional association.

VII. I regularly review my own ethical issues with my colleagues in my society as a part of my ongoing growth and development.

VIII. On behalf of clients, I support social advocacy through SOSBA and other associations I choose to belong to.

IX. I respect and protect the confidential nature of information I obtain from my clients, and I do not disclose any information without the appropriate verbal or written approval. If, in my judgement, there is possible danger to life, I may, with the best interest of the client in mind, breach this confidentiality. Only the appropriate person(s) will be informed.

“To be an integrated individual, [you] must be identified with [your] body and with [your] word... To achieve this integration, one must start with being the body - You are your body... One must end with being the word - You are your word. But the word must come from the heart.” Alexander Lowen, Founder of Bioenergetic Analysis
