Protecting
the Self:
A Shield, Fortress or Prison?
This
workshop explores how our
Physical, Emotional & Psychological Defenses work together
Protecting
the core self.
The body has a variety of resources to draw upon in protecting the core
self from anxiety, flooding, insults, manipulation & wounding. We
need to use these tools to get through times of “too much”
or of “not enough”
The
workshop will examine how these tools for defence can
become deeply ingrained and limit our aliveness; in effect, transforming
from being a shield, to becoming a prison. “The sequence - reaching
out for pleasure -->deprivation, frustration or punishment -->anxiety
and then -->defence - is a general scheme to explain all personality
problems.” Alexander Lowen founder of Bioenergetic Analysis
In
this workshop we will explore ...
• What are the major physical self-protection or defence styles
• How these defence styles become chronic & unconscious muscular
tensions - a permanent shield or block
• How this shield or muscular block becomes supported by psychological
defences, emotions & belief system
• Ways to identify some of these blocks that are interfering
• Tools to use for creating options that are more appropriate
and honouring of self today
• How linking positive physical change to psychological, emotional
and cognitive change strengthens the sense of self
Workshop
benefits
• Greater contact and familiarity with the repertoire of self-protective
tools
• More ways to monitor and determine pacing and focus in working
with clients that supports the client’s approach to healing
• Increased ability to recognize when a reactive (vs a pro-active)
response is taking hold in yourself
• How to unhook from a reactive response
• Accept & integrate more aliveness and self-trust in your
life
As we explore
the interconnection of the self-protection tools we have, we set up
a dialogue with the deep, core self. Having the support and in the safety
of the training group, we can soften the grip these defensive responses
have. We can begin transforming these self-protective, defensive responses
from the prison back to the shield and use the saved energy for daily
living.
Workshop approach
The workshop combines theoretical & experiential approaches to ensure
that you "get the feel" of the concepts presented, bioenergetically
and developmentally. We move back and forth between solid theoretical
models and experience, thus giving your knowledge a solid foundation.
You will also be learning from the experiences of each other, in a playful,
safe, supportive, open-hearted setting.

Future
Workshops
The future series of workshops will focus upon the major defensive approaches
used to manage insults and wounds to the core self. They shield us against:
terror; longing; shame; confusion; being used; and heartbreak. As reflexive
responses to perceived threat, occurring outside of our awareness, they
limit our aliveness and creativity.
